8 - 13 July 2012: Masterclass for piano and on jazz improvisation
with Pietro De Maria and Charl du Plessis
The participants attending the master class will get a profound insight in the interpretation of the oeuvre of Frédéric Chopin and in the jazz improvisation based on Chopin’s compositions.
Qualified for participation are students at and graduates from colleges, schools and academies of music, who are not older than twenty-five years of age. The master class is also open to the public.

Pietro De Maria is a pianist of outstanding talent with a reputable musical training – among others with Maria Tipo. His performances have received worldwide critical acclaim, thanks to several first prizes at important music concourses and an intelligent repertoire choice. His latest recordings of a selection of works by Chopin are already regarded as reference models. Pietro De Maria regularly teaches master classes at home and abroad. He is a much sought after teacher and jury member at international music contests, most recently in 2011 at the 58th International Piano Concourse Ferrucio Busoni in Bolzano, Italy.
Charl du Plessis is a versatile and very well-known pianist from South Africa. He attended György Sebök’s last master classes in Ernen and in 2009 he was awarded a doctoral degree as a pianist with Professor Joseph Stanford at the University of Pretoria, where he now lectures in jazz and classical piano. In 2006 he founded the Charl du Plessis Trio, which was immediately met with great success. This resulted in invitations to South Africa’s most prestigious festivals. He also performs regularly in Europe and Asia and has recorded four albums. Charl du Plessis is a Steinway artist.
11 - 17 August 2012: Master class for organ
with Zsigmond Szathmáry
Already for the 33rd time now Zsigmond Szathmáry invites musicians to a master class for organ in Ernen. The purpose of the master class is to provide the means to enable the participants to deepen their interpretation, to master fundamental techniques in playing the organ and to find ways to make meaningful decisions with regard to their own interpretation.
The final concert of the Organ Week will take place on Friday, August 17, at 8 o’clock p.m.

Zsigmond Szathmáry was born in Hungary in 1939. He received his musical education in composition and organ at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest. Advanced studies took him to Vienna and Frankfurt. In 1960 he won first prize at the Organ Concourse in Budapest. In 1972 he received the Bach Prize Scholarship of the Free Hansa Town of Hamburg. He worked as an organist in Hamburg and the Cathedral of Bremen. After having taught at the Music Academies of Lübeck and Hanover, he held a professorship at the State Music College in Freiburg i. Br.
Zsigmond Szathmáry is a member of the Free Academy of the Arts in Hamburg and regularly gives guest courses at Music Colleges and Academies in Europe, the USA, Japan and Korea. He is a lecturer at the Summer Academy for Organists in Haarlem (The Netherlands) and lectures at the holiday courses in Darmstadt. In 1987 he was awarded the Franz Liszt Plaque by the Franz Liszt Memorial Committee in Hungary. He has undertaken extensive concert tours and has recorded numerous albums and CDs.
