Part of the series «Chamber Music Compact» – Chiaroscuro Quartet plays 7 concerts in 3 days.
Joseph Haydn: «The Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross» Hob. XX/1:B
Duration approx. 70 minutes
In the opening programme of its seven-part concert series in the Musikdorf Ernen, the Chiaroscuro Quartet presents an extraordinary work that fits in particularly well with the festival theme of «Rituals».
Haydn's «The Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross» was composed for the «Tres Horas», a devotional ceremony popular on Good Friday in the 17th-19th centuries. The church windows were darkened with black cloths between 12 noon and 3 pm in order to contemplate the seven last words of Jesus by candlelight. Haydn's seven sonatas are poignant musical reflections on the last sayings of Jesus, concluding with an overwhelming earthquake.
