Cheryl Frances-Hoad: String Quartet «Ernen» (2025)
World Premiere – Commissioned by the Festivals Musikdorf Ernen
Johannes Brahms: Trio A minor for Clarinet, Violoncello and Piano op. 114
Duration approx. 70 minutes, no interval
This concert marks the world premiere of Cheryl Frances-Hoad's new string quartet «Ernen», which was inspired by Ernen and its surroundings during her stay in autumn 2024. The composer writes about the four movements of the work:
«The first movement takes structural ideas from the beautiful lichen that is so plentiful in the forests. The second, scherzo movement is an experiment in timbre and texture: the initial idea occurred to me whilst I was marvelling at the glittering rock that abounds here.
One evening in September, I sat in the flat and looked out at the beautiful view as it was gradually obscured by cloud. This experience got me thinking about how one might transform harmony and melody over the course of a slow (in this case third) movement, in a way that was somehow simultaneously imperceptible and dramatic. Finally, my fourth movement is all about contrast and perspective: the idea for this movement came to me on the hanging bridge, as I looked down at the trees from above and realised that my normal relationship to them had been inverted!»
