Ludwig van Beethoven: Piano Trio in D major Op. 70 No. 1 "Ghost Trio"
Helena Winkelman: "Ghost Songs" (2023)
World premiere – Commissioned by the Festival Musikdorf Ernen
Duration approx. 70 minutes, no interval
Helena Winkelman remembers her composition teacher Roland Moser telling her that a composition must have windows. She understood this as a demand for openings into other worlds. For the Musikdorf Ernen, Winkelman composed a large song cycle under the title "Ghost Songs", which can also be read as a commitment to a united Europe, because: Each song is sung in a different European language. For this reason alone, their music will lead into different worlds. Winkelman says: "Poets are people with special sensors. They enter inner worlds of experience that are difficult to access, and they bring us messages from an unknown land."
Why "Ghost Songs"? The composer explains: "The first poems of the cycle deal with the beauty of nature and creation, the following ones deal more with our ephemerality, the subsequent ones with the idea of transcending at the end of our existence, and the fourth are texts that bring a kind of retrospective, perhaps almost as a greeting or consolation from the beyond. Hence the title Ghost Songs."
