Part of «Chamber Music Plus»
John Adams: «Shaker Loops» for Strings (1983)
Max Bruch: «Kol Nidrei» for Violoncello and String Orchestra op. 46
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Concerto A major for Piano and Orchestra K. 414
Pēteris Vasks: «Musica Serena» for String Orchestra (2015)
Duration approx. 110 minutes, incl. interval
The first half of the first orchestral concert presents two very different musical explorations of prayer. John Adams's «Shaker Loops» is an iconic work of American minimal music and was also inspired by the ecstatic prayer dances of the Shakers. «Kol Nidrei» is Max Bruch's adaptation of the touching melody sung by the cantor at the start of the highest Jewish holiday (Yom Kippur).
The second half is characterised by a luminous mood, light-hearted and of the most beautiful simplicity in Mozart's Piano Concerto in A major, pensive and with a vision of hope in Pēteris Vask's «Musica Serena», which returns to John Adams with its long span of tension, without his drive, but with extreme emotional depth.
