Henry Purcell: Fantasies C minor Z 738 and G major Z 742
Joseph Haydn: String Quartet in B flat major Op. 33 No. 4
Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy: String Quartet in E flat major Op. 12
Duration approx. 55 minutes
The Chiaroscuro Quartet plays on period instruments, gut strings and with period bows, and does so in such a surprising, fresh and clever way that the ensemble has earned a first-class reputation in a very short time.
In the Chamber Concert 5, the Chiaroscuro juxtaposes Haydn's Quartet in B flat major with its witty ending, Mendelssohn's Quartet in E flat major with its references to Beethoven with the music of Henry Purcell: Purcell's collection of fantasies is comparable in its grandeur and mastery to Bach's Art of the Fugue or the Musical Offering.
