Ludwig van Beethoven: String Quartet No. 1 in F major Op. 18 No. 1
Franz Schubert: String Quartet in A minor D 804
Duration approx. 65 minutes
Just as in painting chiaroscuro contrasts give a picture more expression and drama, the members of the Chiaroscuro Quartet heighten their passionate playing. They tease out the chiaroscuro by letting sounds flare up and plunge into dark abysses.
With the Chamber Concert 7, the Chiaroscuro Quartet brings the 7-part series Chamber Music Compact to a rounded conclusion, returning to the music of Franz Schubert that was heard in the opening concert. Beethoven's very first String Quartet in F major attempts to outdo the founding father of the genre, Joseph Haydn, in clarity and density of thematic-motif work. Schubert's yearning Quartet in A minor already goes beyond the genre tradition in its expression and self-quotations.
