Robert Schumann: «Fantasiestücke» for Clarinet and Piano op. 73

Anna Thorvaldsdottir: «Illumine» for 3 Violins, 2 Violas, 2 Violoncellos and Double Bass (2016)
Johannes Brahms: String Sextet no. 2 G major op. 36

Duration approx. 115 minutes, incl. interval

This programme revolves around Clara and Robert Schumann's relationship with Johannes Brahms, who probably supported Clara in 1893 when she burned the five Romances for cello and piano that Robert had been working on in 1853. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Heinz Holliger revives the music and life of Robert Schumann in his fascinating work "Romancendres".

These romantic works are juxtaposed to Anna Thorvaldsdottir's music with its beautifully shimmering and disturbing sounds, as if the rays of light were illuminating a burdened or destroyed landscape. "Illumine" was inspired by the (Icelandic) dawn and the relationship between light and darkness, especially the magic of the first rays of sunlight.
