Part of «Chamber Music Plus»
Christian Mason, Composer in Residence 2023/24, presents the Theremin. He will also play a selection of pieces on the instrument, accompanied by Alasdair Beatson on the piano.
First introduced in 1921, the Theremin was used in early film music up to the middle of the century to accompany eerie scenes in haunted films (and science fiction), such as King Kong (1933), Bride of Frankenstein (1935) and Hitchcock's psychological thriller Spellbound (1945).
Bohuslav Martinů brought the instrument to the established chamber music stage in his Fantasia for Theremin, Oboe, String Quartet and Piano, compsed in 1944.
Duration approx. 45 minutes, free admission, event in English
