Franz Schubert: Piano Sonata in E flat major D 568
Franz Schubert: Piano Sonata B flat major D 960
Duration approx. 70 minutes, no interval
‘Schubertiade’ in Ernen – Five concerts, one composer. Dasol Kim, Hisako Kawamura and Fabian Müller explore Schubert's piano works: not only the famous late sonatas – those too! – but also Schubert's fascinating music for piano four hands.
The last word of Piano Compact 2023 belongs to Dasol Kim, who is responsible for the weekend's programme. Dasol probably has Schubert's last piano sonata in mind when he says: "It seems as if Schubert hides sadness behind beauty. Sometimes I don't know what to feel when I hear his music. It is so beautiful that it is sad. And vice versa." Schubert touches on incomprehensible worlds in the B flat major Sonata – his last great piano work. Even in the rarely played E-flat major Sonata from 1817, Schubert's typical fractures and depth of expression already sound through the fine surface of beauty.
