It was not until the mid-19th century that a chamber music tradition developed in Paris, largely influenced by Camille Saint-Saëns. He combined the French adaptation of classical forms with the Orientalist fashion of the late 19th century, which is also exemplified in the trio works of Mel Bonis and Gabriel Fauré. Saint-Saëns' trio is a fascinating and rarely heard early masterpiece of French chamber music.
