The programme for Festkonzert 5, entitled ‘Soft Dances’, brings together subtle, gently moving music from three centuries. It begins with Franz Schubert's popular string quartet, which was given the nickname ‘Rosamunde Quartet’ because of the integration of idyllic music from Schubert's incidental music for the fairytale play Rosamunde, Queen of Cyprus in the second movement.
This is followed by the duo work Danses douces by Claire-Mélanie Sinnhuber, Composer in Residence 2025/26 at the Musikdorf Ernen, which is inspired by Baroque dance suites. The music is dreamlike, poetic and subtle, rich in sonic ideas.
The music of Georgi Catoire – a composer whose first-class music has only recently been rediscovered – is also dreamlike, poetic and subtle. Catoire's piano quartet is rooted in late Romantic passion and is the masterful product of a sensitive individualist in the Fin de Siècle, with brilliance and nobility, but also with a high degree of fragility.
