Three works, at least partly Viennese, written by young composers before they turned 20, make the final orchestra concert a musical celebration overflowing with energy.
In Franz Schubert's Rondo in A major, an elegant introduction is followed by a Viennese capricious theme, a simpler dance theme and a rousing orchestral tutti, which reappear repeatedly between virtuoso solo passages.
The majestic opening of the first movement of Mozart's Piano Concerto in E flat major from 1784 captivates with its ambiguity of major and minor, while the exquisite beauty of the second movement lies in Mozart's typical mixture of subtle melancholy and heavenly serenity. The contrapuntal final movement refers to Mozart's study of the works of Bach and Handel.
George Enescu's Octet is a Parisian chamber music work from around 1900, expanded to orchestral size (as in orchestra concert 1) – a work that is developed entirely from the elegant, elegiac opening melody and whose four movements are constructed as a large sonata movement: After the exposition of three thematic complexes (1st movement), an explosive fugato and a kind of nocturne follow as the development, before the recapitulation brings together everything heard so far in the boldest counterpoint as a wild waltz.
