The second performance by renowned Scottish mezzo-soprano Beth Tayler also focuses on the composers Vivaldi and Bach, complemented by typical Italian Baroque music written by composers north of the Alps (Molter and Califano in German-speaking countries, Roman in Sweden).
The cantata «Widerstehe doch der Sünde» (Resist sin) shows Italian influences mainly in the sensuality of the first aria. The surprising dissonance with which the piece begins, between the beautiful (and highly modern!) charms of the upper voices and the long pedal point in the bass, expresses the resistance that humans should show.
The «Stabat mater» is one of Vivaldi's major works of church music, with a restraint in virtuosity that is appropriate to the occasion but uncharacteristic of Vivaldi, in favour of a more direct expression of feelings in the face of Jesus on the cross.
