Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: String Quartet G major KV 80
Cheryl Frances-Hoad: «My Day in Hell» (2008) for String Quartet
Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy: String Quartet F minor op. 80
Duration approx. 70 minutes, no interval
Cheryl Frances-Hoad is Composer in Residence 2024/25 in the Musikdorf Ernen. As part of her residency, she will be working with students from the HEMU University of Music (Sion) on her string quartet «My Day in Hell», which is her exploration of Dante's «Divina Comedia».
As a contrast, Frances-Hoad's music is framed by Mozart's first string quartet - a fresh and singing youthful work that he composed at the age of 14 in the Italian city of Lodi - and by Mendelssohn's last string quartet, in which he reflects on the tragic, much too early death of his sister Fanny. The passionate work is one of the composer's last works, as he died just two months after completing it.
