The debut recital by the young, promising pianist Manoush Toth combines three works full of spirit, wit and lightness. Francis Poulenc's Soirées de Nazelles was composed in 1930 during cosy evenings in Touraine at the country house of his friend Virginie Liénard (1845–1935), known as ‘Auntie’, whose witty character is expressed in Variation 8.
Robert Schumann's Faschingsschwank is a cheerful work overall, with a spirited first movement, a sentimental romance, a colourful scherzino, an urgent and passionate intermezzo and a fiery finale.
Beethoven's Sonata in G major, composed in 1798/99, is similarly light in character, with a carefree, singing first movement, an andante with variations on a march embodying toy soldiers rather than real ones, and a rhythmically playful scherzo finale.
