To conclude the Newcomers Weekend, Trio Basilea, winner of the 2023 Orpheus Competition, returns to the Musikdorf Ernen. Haydn's Trio in A major was composed in London in 1795 and is clearly inspired by English fortepianos, which were larger and more sonorous than their Viennese counterparts.
Mendelssohn's Trio in D minor (1839) is perhaps the most classical of all Romantic piano trios, with its exemplary first movement – whose opening quotation from Schubert's song ‘Fahrt zum Hades’ immediately creates a semantically charged, epically sublime mood – featuring two contrasting themes; the elaborate song without words in the Andante; the Elfenreigen scherzo and the Beethoven-esque finale.
Claire-Mélanie Sinnhuber's Renouée des oiseaux (the bird knotweed) ‘takes its name from weeds – wild, freely growing grass – that grow where they are not wanted, much to the delight of the birds that feast on their seeds,’ according to the composer. Repeated motifs – like the unwanted weed? – constantly appear everywhere in closely intertwined canons. This creates oscillating soundscapes full of colour and energy.
